Capítulo 693: Chapter 693: Do You Think Tang Li Would Still Believe Your Lies?

As soon as the apartment door closed, Ethan was already breaking out in a cold sweat.

He hadn’t anticipated that such a third-rate school would actually sue him over such a trivial matter; the issue was, his so-called movie investment was indeed a sham, and once the lawsuit proceeded, he was sure to lose.

It wouldn’t be as simple as just paying compensation then.

Whether it was business fraud or the crime of human trafficking, if convicted, he might have to spend years in prison here.

He knew that there was no extradition treaty between S country and the United States.

Thus, if he got entangled in a lawsuit in S country without any strong backing, he would truly become a sacrificial fish on the chopping block.

Cold sweat trickled down his forehead; Ethan hurried back to his bedroom to open his laptop and check his email.

The inbox was empty; Lai Shengxia had still not replied.

Ethan’s face grew even paler, and with gritted teeth, he donned a hat and, supporting himself with a cane, left the apartment to look for a public phone booth.

He was grateful that he remembered Lai Shengxia’s cellphone number.

Once he dialed the number, it rang not even twice before Lai Shengxia answered: “Who is this?”

Her voice was clear and cheerful; Ethan heard a burst of laughter and chatter, his hand gripping the handset tightened, he had been hanging by a thread these past few days, yet the culprit was living carefree and at ease!

Considering his predicament, he couldn’t afford to fall out with Lai Shengxia and could only start with a lowered stance: “It’s me, Ethan, Miss Lai, the Art College is going to sue me for business fraud and for trafficking in women and children. I don’t have many acquaintances here and have no idea what to do.”

Lai Shengxia stepped out of the private room with her cellphone in hand.

Upon hearing Ethan’s words, her initial reaction was to rebuke: “If you could control your lower half, there wouldn’t be all these issues after. You’re asking me for help, who should I turn to? I sought you out for work, not to clean up your mess!”

“I know, it’s my fault,” Ethan’s spine bent further, his tone increasingly meek, “Just help me handle this, Miss Lai, and I will take Tang Li out of the country, she—”

Lai Shengxia scoffed: “Do you really think Tang Li would still believe your lies? Ethan, you’re nearly thirty years old, been around the block for over a decade, how can you still be so naive?”

With that, Lai Shengxia’s tone grew colder: “I’ve still got some matters to attend to here. As for the things you mentioned, we can discuss them when I return.”

Before Ethan could respond, he was met with the busy tone from the handset.

He slammed the receiver back onto the phone cradle, cursing loudly, “Bitch!”

Lai Shengxia put her cellphone away and returned to the private room.

Inside the private room, Lai Yuaner sat next to Ouyang Qian, looking demure and tranquil, while Ouyang Qian, still dressed as a successful businesswoman with a faint smile on her lips, was discussing business matters with Fu Jinliang across the table, accompanied by several executives from Tianyi and Longxing.

After sitting down, Lai Shengxia immediately raised her glass, smiling coyly, and continued the conversation from before: “Chairman Fu, this toast is for you. If Tianyi and Longxing can reach a cooperation, it would doubtlessly be a win-win situation for both parties over the next five years.”

“Let’s hope it’s as auspicious as Miss Lai predicts,” Fu Jinliang would not slight a junior.

Lai Shengxia glanced aside, “Yuanyuan, offer a toast to Uncle Fu as well.”

When Lai Yuaner raised her glass, Lai Shengxia turned her gaze back to Fu Jinliang, her smile growing even more humble: “I wonder if Uncle Fu still remembers, Yuanyuan and Fu Si were classmates from elementary to junior high school, they used to cause quite the commotion back then.”
