Chapter 56: First Wave
The head of the goblin shattered under the blow of the hoe. Raze looked up immediately after, not wasting a single moment to see if the goblin was alive or not. He lunged forward, and a wolf immediately charged at him, its jaws wide open, ready to snap like a flytrap.
Raze didn’t pause even for a moment. He swung the hoe downward, slamming it into the side of the wolf, shattering its skull and killing it.
Ella, on the other side, cast flame arrow after flame arrow and took down the infected one after another. Her hands moved around fast as she repeatedly cast the spell. She wasn’t good enough with silent spell casting to use it.
"These monsters are all rank-one monsters and beasts," she said to Raze. "That’s why taking them down is easy, but their number is a lot," she added.
In the world of Gaya, monsters and beasts were generally ranked in the same method. In the same way mages were ranked from one-star mages all the way to seven-star mages, monsters were ranked from rank one all the way to seven.
The reason the ranking method was that simple was because people wanted to have something they could easily learn and recall. But in-depth, monsters that fell in rank one were considered Basic Monsters; rank two and three were generally called Awakened Monsters; rank four were Evolved Monsters; rank five were called True Monsters, and finally, rank six and seven were considered Chaos Monsters.
It applied to both monsters and beasts. The only difference that existed between a monster and a beast was that monsters were a lot smarter than beasts, like goblins, while beasts lived off instincts. In the story, the use of these two words caused many controversies, like when humans called an advanced orc tribe monsters.
"We are lucky that they are all low ranks. It would have been a big issue if not," Raze said. He dodged the attack of a rushing boar and leaped back. He swung the hoe down and shattered its head.
But at this time, the monsters were also rushing past, and they couldn’t stop them, the number was too much for them to handle alone.
Then, at that moment, a massive gust of wind picked up, and tons of infected were thrown into the air. Raze and Ella looked in the direction of what happened, and they saw Fey standing there. He dusted the dirt off his shirt, then frowned. "You vermin have managed to piss me off," he said before lunging forward. They attacked all at once.
He punched, and a huge blast of wind ripped through the infected, exploding them into nothing but mist and blood. None could even come near him before he killed them.
The demonized wolf saw that Fey was causing too much trouble again and rushed at him. Fey looked at it and then smirked before pulling his hand back, concentrating the wind into his fist, and lunging forward.
BAM!
The punch resounded, and the beast was ripped into fragments; its blood fell like rain. Fey then looked over at Raze. "This better bring me enough food at the end," he said before charging at another monster.
With Fey handling part of the issue, Raze could now focus on ensuring not a single infected got into the town. He rushed in, hoe in hand, his Qi rushing fast. A goblin came from ahead and leaped at him. He stepped to the side and swung down full force.
Crack!
Bones shattered from the impact. It slammed into the ground and bounced up. Raze immediately kicked the body so hard it slammed into an incoming wolf, and then he gave chase after, running behind as more goblins, wolves, and wild boars tried to encircle him.
He instantly activated God’s Eye, seeing everything around him in a full three hundred and sixty-degree view. He spun the hoe around and then began moving, swinging left, right, and center in reckless abandon, but each swing was targeted, shattering the heads of the infected as they got hit.
But he wasn’t capable of handling this only with the hoe, so with his free hand, he attacked with flame arrows, stabbing right into the hearts of the goblins. He made sure to attack only them with the arrows because their skin was more exposed than that of the wolves or boars, which meant he could get better contact.
Ella was also doing a crazy job. She cast her spells like she was trying to speed-rap. Each flame blade cut right through the heads of the infected and left their bodies to hit the ground.
She was decisive, fast, and relentless in her attacks, like someone who had faced this sort of issue before. While she fought, she looked around and realized that a good number of the monsters had made it past her and the others.
"They’re getting past!" she screamed. Raze turned around and saw that they were indeed rushing past. He looked over to Fey, who was genuinely handling things there. Raze couldn’t ask him to chase after the few that got past. He began thinking of a plan quickly. But before he could even form one, he heard an explosion.
BOOOOOM!
When he looked back, he saw Ken, Lewis, and Lady Tera standing there. Lewis had his hand stretched out while Ken stood holding a massive sword over his shoulder in full swagger, and Tera leaned against a building with a long smoke pipe in her hand as she took a draw and puffed into the sky.
Lewis had used one spell to blast back all the infected that had rushed in. They were no more than five, so for him, it was easy.
"Your father is guarding the inside of town right now with all his knights. He wanted to rush here when he heard the news, but we told him we would handle it.
Also, the maid is worried sick about you," Ken said casually before dropping his sword down, his eyes turning serious.
