Mysterious Journey
Chapter 2: The Planned Future
The orphanage was not large, and Bennetts' room was only a few minutes away from the dining room.
The houses in the British Isles, with their unique wood and stone structure, were undoubtedly terrible at preventing moisture and dampness, despite their sturdiness.
As soon as Ailina opened the door, she felt the dampness characteristic of the lakeside houses. She frowned, put down the tray in her hand, walked to the window, and opened it.
The cool morning breeze swept away the dampness in the room, making one feel refreshed.
"It's a good thing you're here, otherwise the orphanage would definitely be a mess right now. Thank you for all your hard work."
A thick, middle-aged man's voice came from behind Ailina. Turning around, she saw Bennetts propping himself up from the bed, leaning against the wall. Although his face was still a little pale due to the cold and migraine, his spirit was obviously much better than in the past few days.
"If you ever try to hide things from me again and secretly make money by fighting in underground boxing matches, I swear I will never help you again."
The silver-haired girl snorted softly, walked to Bennetts' bed with a menacing aura, her lake-blue eyes filled with reproach.
If there was an award for the most selfless person, Bennetts would definitely be among the top contenders.
Bennetts was born into a poor, large family. His parents couldn't afford to send him to school. He had been a drug addict and involved in gangs. When he sought help from a priest, he was driven out of the church. Fortunately, a Spanish brotherhood took him in and allowed him to receive education, becoming a priest.
Thinking of his own helpless childhood experiences, Bennetts simply built an orphanage next to his small church, relying on government subsidies, social donations, and his income as a priest to care for orphans.
Ailina was one of the orphans he rescued from the streets of London at that time. You know, Ailina, who had just transmigrated six years ago, couldn't even speak English fluently. If she hadn't been lucky enough to meet Bennetts, it would have been difficult for her to even survive.
However, as the children gradually grew up, the orphanage's finances became increasingly strained.
Unwilling to give up on the orphans, Bennetts had no choice but to constantly take on part-time jobs in neighboring towns to raise funds. A few days ago, he even started secretly going to the city's underground boxing arena to fight.
If it hadn't been for the severe migraine caused by this cold, which forced Bennetts to confess to Ailina and ask for help, Ailina might still have been kept in the dark, enjoying her lavish three meals a day without a care in the world.
Ailina huffed, picked up the bowl, and handed it to Bennetts, while complaining and scolding in a rapid-fire manner.
"There should still be a lot of money left from betting on the World Cup last year, right? Why did you have to go boxing, and we agreed that I would find ways to support the orphanage. Drink the soup first—"
Although she wasn't a die-hard football fan in her previous life, she vaguely remembered that the tragic Argentine team led by Maradona had earned nearly six thousand pounds by relying on those upsets, thanks to that song "Don't Cry For Me Argentina".
Even after renovating the orphanage's houses and improving everyone's three meals, logically speaking, it shouldn't have been so difficult and dire that Bennetts had to go to the underground boxing arena.
Bennetts blew on the bowl of soup in his hand, took a sip, and replied in a calm tone.
"I saved that six thousand pounds for you. The renovation of the houses and the three meals were paid for with the orphanage's previous savings."
"Why?! Who told you to save it!"
Hearing Bennetts' answer, the silver-haired girl acted like a cat whose fur had been ruffled, waving her arms and glaring at the man in front of her, questioning him angrily.
If it wasn't for considering that he had just recovered, Ailina even had the urge to pounce on him and hit him.
Bennetts shrugged, slowly swallowed the fried egg in his mouth, and looked at the gesticulating Ailina, curiously pointing to the empty bowl in his hand and asking.
"Then tell me honestly, what is this? You know, the last time the Wildlife Protection Association came to the door because you were bombing fish in the lake. Besides, I don't know when a breed called Scottish Round-Faced Fat Chicken suddenly appeared nearby."
Every time she was asked this question before, Ailina would casually make up a reason to muddle through, so Bennetts had always been curious about the source of this free chicken soup these days.
Ailina spread her hands, and then generously admitted, "Okay, this is actually stewed owl soup."
"O...owl?! Are you a devil?!"
Bennetts made a strange "wuwu" sound from his throat, his mouth opened so wide that an egg could be stuffed in it, looking at Ailina with a shocked expression.
He had originally thought it would be some other kind of wild bird, after all, Loch Lomond had various birds living there all year round.
"That is to say, these past few days have all been... oh, my Jesus! You are a devil!"
Bennetts, who was almost recovered, suddenly felt another headache, raised his left hand and rubbed his brow, "It's a good thing it's not the Middle Ages now, otherwise you would definitely be sentenced as a witch. Only wizards in legends eat owls."
"No, actually as far as I know, Chinese people used to eat it too, but now it's considered a protected animal there. Forget about that, it tastes really good, and I guarantee these are not wild animals located in the lakeside protected area."
Ailina blinked her eyes, smiled ingratiatingly, raised her right hand to swear, and then continued to explain seriously.
"Owls have good medicinal value, nourishing yin and tonifying deficiency. The meat is more tender and smooth than ordinary chicken. After removing the internal organs, the whole body can be used as medicine. The most important thing is that owl meat contains some medicinal ingredients that can relieve pain.
"Wasn't it because I saw you having headaches recently? I thought about it and thought that using owls to make soup to nourish your body would be the most suitable. It's just a pity that *Tianma* only exists in Asia, otherwise if I could stew a pot of *Tianma* owl soup, the taste would be simply, tsk tsk tsk..."
*Tianma* is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine.
*plonk*.
At this moment, a strange noise came from the windowsill, sounding like someone had accidentally bumped into the half-open window.
Ailina stopped talking alertly, turned her head to look out the window, and only saw a brown-black tabby cat falling from the eaves and onto the open windowsill.
She didn't expect there to be such a clumsy stray cat, who even tripped while walking. Its life must be very difficult, right?
Ailina blinked her eyes, snatched a piece of meat from Bennetts' bowl, squatted down, gently placed it in front of the stray cat on the windowsill, and said with a smile.
"Kitty, eat, eat."
To her surprise, the next moment after seeing the piece of meat, the tabby cat reacted as if it had been seriously offended. The whole cat bristled up, making a low purring sound, obviously extremely angry.
Looking closely, there was a circle of strange square patterns around the eyes of this tabby cat. At first glance, it looked like a pair of glasses.
Ailina frowned, made eye contact with the cat squatting on the windowsill, and wondered if it was just her imagination, but she seemed to see human-like anger and condemnation in those shining cat eyes.
A vague thought flashed through the silver-haired loli's mind. She felt like she had forgotten something.
Forget it, it probably wasn't anything important. Since it didn't accept the food and dared to throw a tantrum, this little cat wasn't cute at all.
Shaking her head helplessly, Ailina's eyes changed, she suddenly reached out her hand with lightning speed, accurately pinched the soft skin on the back of the black cat's neck, and threw it out of the window without any mercy.
"Meow? Meow!"
You know, rabies vaccines are very troublesome in this era, so it's best to avoid being scratched by stray cats as much as possible.
After a short episode, Ailina clapped her hands, looked back at Bennetts, and said unhappily.
"Anyway, I've confessed. Now it's your turn. Why are you working so hard, even at the cost of earning money by fighting in underground boxing matches?"
Bennetts sat up straight, looked at the girl he had brought back from the streets of London six years ago, and said after a moment of silence.
"You've wanted to leave here and study in America for a long time, right?"
"Huh?!"
"You... were especially worrying when you were a child, and you always talked in your sleep every night."
Bennetts said with a gentle look, "Although most of what you said was unintelligible, I could still recognize some frequently repeated words."
Sleep talking?! Fortunately, she usually spoke Chinese in her sleep, Ailina felt a burst of fear, then looked at Bennetts with confusion and asked, "Words?"
"Yes, for example, Harvard University, Silicon Valley, Microsoft, Wall Street..." Bennetts frowned, trying hard to recall, "Most of the rest are some strange words, such as Apple, Blizzard, Amazon, Facebook, Tencent, Alibaba..."
Those aren't strange words at all, Ailina's eyes flickered.
In another ten years, they would almost be the entire internet world. As a reborn person, she had been constantly thinking about how to get on this train to the top of the great era.
After a pause, Bennetts reached out and rubbed Ailina's silver hair on the top of her head, "Studying abroad is a considerable expense. You shouldn't be limited to the Scottish Highlands by me and the orphanage. If you don't mind, I can find a way to apply for adoption."
"Father Bennetts..."
The silver-haired loli was filled with mixed feelings for a moment, grabbed the big hand on her head, and was about to say something with a complicated expression.
*Knock knock knock*.
At this moment, there was a sudden knock on the door, followed by Bran's timid voice.
"Father Bennetts, although I have repeated many times that you are unwell, this lady claiming to be McGonagall-Minerva still insists on visiting you in person, saying that she wants to discuss Ailina's admission."
⊙∀⊙! Wait... who was it?!
Ailina's eyes suddenly widened.
About Ailina's admission? Without waiting for Ailina to object, Bennetts answered loudly without hesitation.
"It's okay, I've recovered almost completely, and Ailina is here too. Please come in, Ms. McGonagall."
Bennetts didn't notice that at this moment, Ailina, who had been full of confidence and ready to talk about her life plans, suddenly trembled, and almost subconsciously wanted to jump out of the window and run away.
McGonagall Minerva?!
That cold-faced Professor McGonagall of Hogwarts?!
Ailina suddenly realized what that fleeting vague thought was.
——Professor McGonagall is an Animagus who can turn into a cat.
That being said, the tabby cat that heard the "Scottish Round-Faced Fat Chicken" cookbook and was thrown out of the windowsill by her just now...
It's over, it's over, she's doomed!
She didn't want to experience the feeling of being turned into some kind of small animal for violating school rules. Other people are hard to say, but as a woman, Ailina didn't believe that Professor McGonagall would be so magnanimous as to pretend that what happened before hadn't happened.
In this case, even if a knife was held to her neck, she starved to death in the streets, or was hit by a car, she, Ailina, would absolutely never step into Hogwarts.
