Chapter 28: Galleons Aren't Just Gold Coins

After paying another two fifty-pound notes as consultation fees, Elena's exchange of Galleons went smoothly beyond expectations.

In less than fifteen minutes, the goblin Serkins completed a series of tedious tasks for Elena, including information registration, account opening, currency exchange, and more, delivering the cloth bag filled with coins to the silver-haired little girl.

By the way, in addition to most of the Galleons, Serkins thoughtfully provided Elena with a certain proportion of Sickles and Knuts to facilitate her upcoming shopping trip.

"So this is a Galleon, the craftsmanship is surprisingly good."

Elena curiously picked up a gold coin and examined it carefully. In terms of size and specifications, it wasn't too big, only about half a circle larger than a one-yuan coin from her previous life. The front of the gold coin was printed with an abstract fire dragon logo, and the edge was a circle of numbers, which were the numbers engraved by the Gringotts minting goblins, also the minting goblin's identification number.

"However, the weight and texture… seem a bit off?"

The next moment, the girl weighed the gold coin in her hand, lightly scratching the surface of the coin with her fingernail. The shiny coin remained glossy, without any dents or scratches.

Elena raised her eyebrows. Without a doubt, neither the weight nor the texture of the shimmering Galleon in front of her suggested it was a gold coin cast directly from natural gold.

In her previous life, as a fan of the Harry Potter series and a master in quantitative economics, Elena had explored a very interesting question with many people in a fan discussion group numbered [862-074-819].

As the first country to implement the gold standard, even after entering the credit standard (i.e., paper currency standard) monetary system, gold still had a pivotal influence on the British economic system. And the Galleon in the magical world was undoubtedly the biggest challenge to the new credit standard currency.

That is, once the Galleon is stripped of its monetary attributes, the actual value it possesses is higher than its exchange value, it would be a catastrophic economic collapse for both worlds.

In 1991, where Elena now found herself, the price of one ounce of gold was $360.75, which is approximately £8.68 per gram of gold. Keep in mind, a steel-core nickel-plated one-yuan coin weighs about 6 grams, and the same volume of pure gold weighs about 15.7 grams, worth about £136.

However, the exchange rate used by the Gringotts goblins was: one Galleon equals five pounds!

To put it even more bluntly, if, after melting a Galleon into gold, it could be sold for a price far higher than the currency price required to exchange for it, the gold reserves of the magical world would first plummet, followed by a currency exchange freeze, until all exchange channels with the Muggle world were completely closed.

(If you still don’t understand, please click to see the notes.)

In short, under the contradictory constraints of purchasing power and exchange rates, if the goblins and the magical world wanted to maintain a normal financial system, the only conclusion they could reach was—issue debased coins on a large scale. The current [Galleon] is not a [gold coin], but at most a magical currency cast from a small amount of gold and cheap metals alloy.

This also perfectly explains the incredible event in the original "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" when Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic at the time, tossed a prize of one thousand Galleons to Harry Potter with one hand. That's nearly 80 kilograms of weight!

"Excuse me… respected Miss Elena, is there a problem with this Galleon?"

Andy Serkins asked anxiously.

Ever since this generous human girl obtained the Galleons, she had seemed to be bewitched. She had been playing with and examining just one gold coin for nearly five minutes. Even the most wealth-obsessed goblin was no more enthusiastic than this.

"Oh, it's nothing. I just thought of something else."

Coming back to her senses, Elena shook her head without answering. She flicked her finger lightly, skillfully placing the Galleon at her fingertip into the small cloth bag at her waist, then turned to look at Dumbledore and asked.

"So Professor Dumbledore, where are we going next?"

"Well… next, of course, we need to equip you with the school supplies you need in Diagon Alley. Let me see."

Dumbledore took out a piece of parchment from his robes with some ink stains on the back, pushed up his glasses, and carefully looked at the various items listed on it, softly reciting, "Uniforms, books, wands, classroom supplies, and in addition, students may bring one… ahem, I think I get it."

As the old wizard read, he suddenly coughed slightly with a strange expression. Before Elena could see the contents of the parchment in his hand, he quickly folded the list and put it back into his robes.

"First, let's buy you a uniform. From a personal perspective, I recommend Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions."

Dumbledore smiled kindly, took Elena's little hand without further explanation, and walked towards the Gringotts' door.

For some reason, Dumbledore suddenly had a bad feeling, as if something troublesome might happen if he continued to stay with Elena in Gringotts.

"Wait, Professor Dumbledore, aren't you deliberately omitting something?"

Standing on the sunny commercial street outside Gringotts, Elena glared at Dumbledore with some dissatisfaction.

If she remembered correctly, at the end of each new student's school supply list, it should be specially noted: students may bring an owl or a cat or a toad as a pet.

"Is there? You must have misheard. As the headmaster of Hogwarts, I assure you that these are all the school supplies you need, Miss Elena."

Dumbledore blinked in confusion, explaining to the silver-haired little girl in a serious tone. His sincerity was so convincing that Elena would have almost been fooled if she hadn't read the original at least ten times.

"Pets! Every young wizard can bring a pet to Hogwarts! I saw the list attached to the second page at Father Benitez's place last night. Professor Dumbledore, how can you do this!"

Elena puffed out her cheeks and angrily shook off Dumbledore's hand. She wasn't some kind of demon. Why did he have to try to deprive her of the chance to keep a pet?

"Um… is that so? I see, this ink blot just happened to block the content behind it. By the way, what flavor of ice cream would you like to eat?"

Dumbledore took out the parchment with a surprised look, pretending to open it and glanced at it, revealing an expression of sudden realization, and suddenly changed the subject stiffly.

Heh—

Here comes that routine again.

The silver-haired little girl rolled her eyes, ignoring Dumbledore, and walked into Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions next to the street by herself. If it weren't for the overwhelming difference in combat power, Elena would have even planned to tear out his beard directly for this unscrupulous old wizard who couldn't even bother to come up with a good excuse.

The girl's voice came from the swaying doorway of the clothing store.

“…Chocolate flavor, and strawberry flavor. It's best to add some chopped nuts on top of that.”

Sob sob sob, four in the morning, finally fulfilled the promise and finished coding.

I originally wrote 1000 words at 2 AM and wanted to sleep, but suddenly I saw the 150,000 Qidian coins rewarded by Wang Wang Xiaozhu, and realized that there might be so many people waiting for my update.

So I washed my face with cold water and continued to write this chapter.

Perhaps this chapter is a bit dry, but every word is written well. There is no water at all, so dear readers, please forgive me for being so obedient and forgive me for updating so late.
