Mysterious Journey
Chapter 400: A Fated Rival
Standing at the corner of the stairs on the second floor of the castle, Hermione, clutching "Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1," paused and looked at Erina and the others.
The first class on Thursday morning for the first-year Gryffindor students was Charms, which they attended with Ravenclaw students.
As arranged beforehand, Luna's school schedule would mirror Hermione's. So, she would separate from Erina here and head to the Charms classroom on the fourth floor with Hermione to begin her first magic lesson.
Meanwhile, the Hufflepuff students had Professor McGonagall's Transfiguration class. They would only reunite for the History of Magic class in the second period of the morning—though, perhaps Professor Binns wouldn't find this something to look forward to.
"Well then, I'm entrusting Luna to you, Hermione. If she doesn't understand anything—"
"I'll help Luna even if you don't say so," Hermione said crossly.
"Luna, don't be nervous, Charms isn't that difficult..."
Erina blinked and turned to look at little Luna, preparing to offer a few more words of advice.
However, before she could finish, the crowded Hogwarts student traffic surged forward, sweeping Hermione, Luna, and the others standing on the stairs upward. Erina only had time to wave before Hermione and Hannah's figures disappeared into the mixed colors of the crowd.
...
After the first meeting of the new edition of "The Quibbler" yesterday afternoon, and the food photography session this morning, Hermione and Luna quickly became acquainted, almost to the point of being good friends.
At least, compared to other first-year students at Hogwarts, Hermione felt more relaxed and comfortable when interacting with Luna—perhaps partly due to the almost two-year age difference, and the sense of responsibility in guiding a younger student.
For Luna, these past two days at Hogwarts had been incredibly joyful.
The castle, portraits, ghosts, magic, galleons, Erina...
Everything was fresh and interesting to Luna Lovegood. Regardless of Erina's starting point and purpose, she had at least done a good deed. Luna no longer had to wait alone for a year, with no one to talk to except her father. Now, she was surrounded by many friendly, enthusiastic peers.
Luna carefully protected the Leica camera hanging around her neck, tightly holding Hermione's hand, and nervously followed behind Hermione, so as not to be accidentally separated by the crowded flow.
"Don't worry, Luna. The Hogwarts castle stairs aren't complicated. Just remember the operating rules of the main routes each week," Hermione said, turning her head to look at Luna with a smile.
"Usually, as long as you're not a hopeless lost cause like Erina, most people can find their classrooms after a week. Even if you occasionally get lost, you can quickly reorient yourself."
"Eh?! Erina is a lost cause?"
Luna tilted her head curiously, responding hesitantly, "But she knows so much, whether it's Bubble-Brain Charm, Pikachu, Eevee, or those little-known magical secrets, and she knows so many spells..."
"But, a lost cause is a lost cause, Luna." Hermione winked playfully. "If you've ever seen her helpless scene of wandering around on the first basement floor, you'll understand that some people, no matter how amazing they are, just can't find their way to where they want to go."
"That's hard to imagine..." A strange expression appeared on Luna's face.
As Hermione described it, an image of Erina constantly circling in Hogwarts Castle, unable to reach her destination, flashed in her mind—the contrast between this and the image of the dangerous, powerful, unfathomable wisdom and experience of Sister Erina was too great.
You see, whether it was in previous correspondence, or the planning and strategies from yesterday to today, in Luna's eyes, Erina seemed like a main character with three hundred and sixty degrees of perfection.
"You'll know these things later. Actually, although Erina is amazing in many ways, she has quite a few weaknesses."
Hermione shrugged. "As long as we find the right way, the three of us can definitely have her wrapped around our fingers."
Compared to Hannah Abbott, who could only rely on intuition to analyze the situation, Hermione could easily tell from Erina's words and actions in the past two days that their little group had expanded once again, and Luna would definitely become one of them.
And at this time, the most important thing was obviously to establish camp divisions in advance, to pull Luna into the fragile "anti-white-haired-dumpling" camp before she turned into Erina's shape.
"For example, did you notice that little tuft of hair on top of her head? As long as..."
"Mmm, what else?"
"And her waist is especially sensitive, a slight pinch will..."
Next, Hermione naturally discussed with Luna about the topic of "the unknown weaknesses of the third-generation Dark Lord." The relationship between the two little girls, who were still somewhat unfamiliar, quickly became closer—a common enemy, and common friends, are always the easiest things to reach a tacit understanding, and Erina took both into account.
Walking and stopping along the way, by the time they arrived at the Charms classroom, most of the students were already seated.
Professor Flitwick, standing behind a stack of books on the desk, was holding the roster, preparing to start roll call. When he saw Luna and Hermione walking into the classroom holding hands, he did not show a strange expression on his face, but instead nodded with a friendly smile.
Obviously, Dumbledore had also communicated with him in advance about the situation of this special "auditor."
This Charms class was attended by both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw students, and this was also Luna's first close contact with Ravenclaw students. Compared to the energetic Gryffindors, or the extremely enthusiastic Hufflepuffs, most of the Ravenclaw students seemed a bit tired, as if they generally hadn't rested well at night.
Since Hogwarts experienced a unique week of "military training" activities at the beginning of this semester, the course progress was naturally delayed by a week compared to normal.
Therefore, although school had been in session for three weeks, the current teaching content of Charms class was still relatively basic casting gestures, as well as training and familiarization with simple spells such as the Lumos charm, Scourgify charm, Alohomora charm...
These contents were of course not difficult for Hermione.
She had even secretly tried some spells before school started. Now, she had the energy to focus her attention on Luna Lovegood, patiently teaching her how to cast these basic spells.
"A spell adds some attributes to an item or creature... Focus must be high when casting..."
For a top student, mastering knowledge is only part of the joy, and the other part of the source of happiness comes from the classmates (xue zha) around who are still diligently waving their wands, trying to maintain their magic.
However, Hermione's little unknown happiness did not last long.
"This wand wouldn't be..."
Hermione's eyebrows twitched slightly as her gaze fell on the particularly familiar black walnut wand in Luna's hand.
"Mm, this is Sister Erina's wand, she gave it to me."
Luna nodded, answering quickly.
"Oh, Erina is very kind to you." Hermione nodded expressionlessly—you know, when she wanted to touch Erina's "chopsticks" before, that food-protecting white-haired dumpling didn't show so much generosity.
However, the wronged have their avengers, and Hermione wouldn't be angry at the innocent little Luna.
What's more, it's Erina's own business who she wants to give Erina's wand to, what does it have to do with her, Hermione·not angry·Granger expressed that she really doesn't care at all!
Hermione quickly calmed her little emotions, and smiled calmly at Luna.
"Do you remember my explanation and demonstration just now? Although Lumos is simple, it's acceptable for beginners to produce a little light, don't be too discouraged... Anyway, try it first."
"Mm."
Luna nodded, and followed Hermione's demonstration and explanation, raising her wand particularly seriously, drawing a circle in the air and then swiping it down, whispering.
"Lumos."
The next moment, a soft, pearly white halo immediately surged from the tip of the wand.
The entire classroom seemed to suddenly brighten several times, causing the other students in the classroom and Professor Flitwick to involuntarily stop their movements and turn their heads to look over here.
"Miss Lovegood, well done!" Professor Flitwick clapped excitedly, not stingy with his praise.
"Everyone, look, Miss Lovegood has succeeded, you all have to work harder and focus a little more."
This time, even Professor Flitwick couldn't pretend not to see this special "auditor."
If he remembered correctly, this little witch should only be ten years old this year, like that Erina from Hufflepuff, both of whom were early entrants.
And what pleased Professor Flitwick the most was that, judging from the family background of this little witch, she would most likely belong to Ravenclaw next year when she was sorted—after all, as far as he knew, the Lovegood family had always come from Ravenclaw, just like the Weasley family from Gryffindor next door.
The only pity was that, since there was no sorting, he couldn't even give the child points now.
"This?!"
Hermione's pupils contracted slightly, suddenly remembering the scene Hannah had described about Erina in Charms class.
It seemed that this Miss Luna Lovegood's magical talent and ability were not below her own—she didn't know why, but looking at the young blonde little girl in front of her, she suddenly felt a subtle sense of crisis of encountering a destined rival.
