Mysterious Journey
Chapter 675: Newt and Aileen
Late at night, in Newt Scamander's living room.
Although Eileen's smile remained, the atmosphere had imperceptibly become serious.
With just a couple of simple questions and answers, both Eileen and Newt realized that they were, in some ways, kindred spirits, but the most crucial point was that they had different interpretations of the same ideals.
This conversation could very well determine the mainstream understanding of the magical creature field for a long time to come.
It was like in religious or scientific disputes – a heretic is always more dangerous than an infidel.
"...I think we should be considered companions?" Eileen said, "In researching and protecting magical creatures?"
"Perhaps, Miss Kaslana, but only if you abandon those terrible ideas! I'm sorry, I cannot accept raising those intelligent and wonderful magical creatures like pigs waiting to be slaughtered! I study magical creatures simply to understand them... Does exploring the unknown require us to predict whether it has value beforehand?"
Newt shook his head noncommittally and turned to look directly at the girl's face, bathed in magical light.
The allure of a Veela was certainly evident in this little girl. If it were a wizard with a less firm will, he might unconsciously be influenced by Eileen – but that clearly didn't include Newt.
As a wizard who had spent years dealing with various magical creatures, not to mention that Eileen was still a young, undeveloped Veela, even a fully grown, shapely, angelic-faced pure-blood Veela would find it difficult to successfully charm Newt Scamander, who had already raised his mental guard.
"As long as something is alive, it has at least some edible value."
Eileen quipped habitually, then quickly waved her hand, "Just kidding, I'm just giving an example..."
"But those are living beings. If you think that joke is funny..."
"I apologize, I can apologize for my previous analogy if you mind."
Seeing the gloomy expression on Newt Scamander's face, Eileen's expression changed, and she replied seriously.
"But just like Professor Dumbledore has been doing all these years, wizards study magical creatures so that they can, at some point, feed back into the magical world. That is the reason for the existence of all natural basic disciplines."
Undoubtedly, Newt Scamander often gave people the impression of being an easy-going softie.
However, as a little witch who also came from Hufflepuff, Eileen knew very well what kind of stubborn beast was hidden in the hearts of her house's predecessors. Touching an honest person's bottom line was an extremely dangerous test.
Since Newt had expressed his emotions repeatedly, she naturally wouldn't be foolish enough to continue playing with fire.
With Eileen's rapid change in attitude, the displeasure on Newt's face dissipated slightly.
"Professor Dumbledore these years? What are you referring to?" Newt frowned.
"Albus Dumbledore's most well-known contributions include: discovering twelve uses of dragon blood, and his fruitful work in alchemy with partner Nicolas Flamel..."
Eileen took a card out of the wallet in her chest, cleared her throat, and read softly.
"So?" Newt said, "I don't feel there's anything wrong with that..."
"Discovering twelve new uses for dragon blood, how many pints of dragon blood do you think it would take to conduct the experiments? That doesn't include the repetitive verification to confirm the conjectures, and the increased consumption after the new uses are spread."
Eileen tapped her finger lightly on the empty border of the Chocolate Frog card.
As usual, Dumbledore's face disappeared from the picture, and he didn't seem to be coming back anytime soon.
A long time ago, Eileen had always suspected that Dumbledore had some way to collect information through the central hub of his Chocolate Frog cards, even though the old radish had denied this guess without hesitation.
"Dragon blood? I understand your idea," Newt nodded, his tone somewhat cold, "There are too many things on dragons that can be used in the magical field. They are indeed a semi-recognized captive species in the magical world. But what does that prove?"
"I just want to argue that without formalized breeding, effective value development is impossible."
Eileen answered calmly, not affected in the slightest.
"From the perspective of species and nature, standardized, goal-oriented artificial breeding will not only not affect the existing natural ecology and species survival, but will also help protect wild magical creatures from harm."
"But you can't guarantee that people will follow your ideas, poaching..."
Newt opened his mouth, ready to refute Eileen's words without thinking.
However, before he could finish speaking, the voice coming from his ear directly blocked his subsequent words.
"On the other hand, before artificial breeding has scaled up, we should first establish ecological protection zones."
Eileen glanced at Newt, slightly raising her voice, and continued to speak methodically at her previous pace, without giving Newt Scamander a chance to interject or refute.
"In my opinion, wild magical creatures and artificially bred magical creatures are inherently two types of samples that need to be clearly separated for research: repetitive experiments focus on stability and standardization. Without standardized breeding procedures, wild magical creatures in a completely open environment will be very controversial, both in terms of consumption and research..."
Under the girl's unwavering gaze, Newt's breathing faltered slightly.
Over the years, he had rarely felt this kind of logical debate that resembled gears meshing and rotating, as if the person sitting opposite him was not a living girl, but a precisely constructed, oppressive ancient wizard's golem.
"The dragon protection zone is indeed a good plan, but you only did the first half."
Eileen delicately raised a finger, looking into Newt Scamander's eyes and said softly.
"You should have also noticed the inappropriateness, right? As a magical material with a fairly high frequency of use in the magical world and involving an extremely wide range of fields, the purpose of the dragon protection zone itself has conflicting points – it not only assumes the responsibility of protecting endangered magical creatures, but is also labeled as a breeding slaughterhouse by people."
"I can't help but wonder..."
Eileen's lake-blue eyes narrowed into a slit, her voice carrying a hint of cold mockery.
"Are these magical creature protection zones really intended to protect wild magical creatures from human wizarding activities, or... just artificially demarcated hunting grounds for privileged groups? Perhaps, it can also give you peace of mind?"
Newt Scamander's face twisted instantly, and he clenched his right fist, saying urgently and loudly:
"Hunting grounds? Peace of mind? Do you think you're the only one who can see these problems? But the magical world needs dragon heartstrings, dragon meat, dragon blood, dragon sinew, dragon nerves... Do you know how complicated the industrial chain and magical departments involved are? How much do you really know about dragons? Do you think dragons are like domestic pigs, that can be kept in houses?"
"Really? Can't they?"
A hint of a smile appeared at the corner of Eileen's mouth, and a gold coin suddenly appeared between her fingers, which she flicked forward.
Newt frowned and instinctively reached out to catch it.
This was a strange Galleon that looked somewhat different, with a different set of numbers engraved on the front and back edges, and the icon printed on the back was no longer the back of a dragon pattern, but...
Newt looked at the pattern on the coin in his hand, slightly stunned.
"Is this Hogwarts Castle?"
"That's right, this is the newly issued [Hogwarts-Galleon], abbreviated as Hogo. But this is not the focus of our discussion right now. What I want you to see is actually the dragon pattern on the original Galleon."
Eileen shrugged and explained casually, then her face straightened.
"Gringotts' tradition of taming dragons to guard vaults is much older than wizards establishing dragon protection zones, but why hasn't there been a large-scale dragon breeding industry to this day? Dragons are always in high demand."
The young fairy queen's eyes sparkled brightly as she said softly, word by word.
"Mr. Scamander, do you really think that the purpose of the Ministry of Magic, various pure-blood families, and even Gringotts in promoting you to establish dragon protection zones and enacting the 'Prohibition of Illegal Dragon Hunting Act' is to protect dragons?"
"If dragon blood was no longer sold by the gram, but calculated by the ton, it would be a mess."
"Rarity creates profit. And privilege is the easiest way to create rarity."
"This is capital, the same in every world..."
A look of helplessness appeared on Newt Scamander's face, and he sighed deeply.
"Well... Miss Kaslana... if this is a complete chain of interests, involving the complex situation of all aspects of the magical world... but this is the adult world, everyone must abide by this rule..."
Although these were not his areas of expertise, after so many years of setbacks, Newt Scamander could more or less sense the multiple backers hidden behind the scenes, so he could barely understand what Eileen was trying to express.
Even... his explanation might not be as simple and clear as the girl's.
"Those are the rules of the past, but times have changed..."
Eileen gently traced the Hogwarts pattern on the new Galleon with her finger, and smiled slightly.
"From now on, my will is the will of capital in this world; and the rules I set are the rules of the capital market in this new era... So, Mr. Newt Scamander, are you interested in trying again in the new era?"
