Mysterious Journey

Chapter 710 The Mysterious Hogwarts Letter

The last day of August in St. Petersburg.

Even while still in bed in his bedroom, Yermakov Ivanovich heard his daughter Irina's joyful screams from the living room, along with some strange, eerie laughter and rustling flapping sounds.

"Irina? What's going on?" Yermakov grabbed his wand and walked into the living room, puzzled.

Besides Irina Ivanovich, there was an unexpected guest in the living room: a small owl, about the size of a fist, was happily hopping around on the coffee table, occasionally flapping its wings to brush against Irina.

His most precious little daughter, Irina Ivanovich, was sitting on the sofa in the living room, giggling foolishly, clutching a thick, yellow parchment envelope in her hand, the words written in emerald green ink.

"The letter from Hogwarts! It has my name on it!"

Hearing the noise from the living room, Irina quickly turned her head and waved the envelope excitedly.

"Dad! Mr. Newt Scamander wasn't lying to us! Does this mean I can go to school!"

"A letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry?"

Mr. Ivanovich's remaining drowsiness vanished instantly, and he strode over, took the thick parchment envelope from his daughter's hand. On the back was a particularly exquisite wax seal, bearing a shield crest, a capital "H" surrounded by a lion, an eagle, a badger, and a snake.

Yes, that was the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry crest. He had seen it in a book about magical heraldry.

The content of the letter was simple: it notified Irina that she had been accepted to Hogwarts and instructed her to take the Hogwarts Express from King's Cross Station on September 1st. The letter also included a list of books and equipment that Irina Ivanovich would need for the coming year.

Hogwarts' requirements for magical books, uniforms, and equipment were similar to those of Koldovstoretz (a magic school near Moscow).

All students must prepare the following books:

*The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1* by Miranda Goshawk

*A History of Magic* by Bathilda Bagshot

*Magical Theory* by Adalbert Waffling

*A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration* by Emeric Switch

*One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi* by Phyllida Spore

*Magical Drafts and Potions* by Arsenius Jigger

*Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them* by Newt Scamander

*The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection* by Quentin Trimble

In fact, up to this point, Mr. Ivanovich hadn't been too confused. Pure English magical textbooks were still in a position of absolute authority in today's magical world.

However...

As he continued down the book list, things gradually started to go awry...

*Calculus Textbook* by Grigory Fichtenholz

*Mathematical Analysis* by Vladimir Zorich

*A Course of Higher Mathematics* by Vladimir Smirnov

*Problems in Mathematical Analysis* by Boris Demidovich

*Physics for Entertainment* by Yakov Perelman

*Physics: Principles and Problems* by Paul Zitzewitz

*The Feynman Lectures on Physics* by Richard Feynman

*Biology: The Dynamics of Life* by Alton Biggs

*What Is Life?* by Erwin Schrödinger

...

Reading the string of familiar Russian book titles and author names, as well as foreign textbooks he had never heard of, the Ivanovich father and daughter looked at each other, a look of bewilderment appearing in their eyes.

"Dad, is this the legendary Hogwarts? Why do the textbooks look a bit like the ones from our middle school and high school..."

The excitement on Irina's face gradually faded.

From the current situation, the curriculum at that mysterious Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry seemed to be a bit different from the curriculum at Koldovstoretz Magic School, where Grandpa used to teach.

At least in Irina's memory, Koldovstoretz didn't have a separate math class.

And if the names of those former Soviet mathematicians seemed somewhat familiar, then the series of subjects and book titles that followed, which she had never encountered before, caused the girl to feel a little unsure of herself.

Fortunately... the names of those textbooks all sounded quite interesting.

Especially those textbooks written by foreigners, they sounded at least more friendly than Mr. Demidovich's *Problems in Mathematical Analysis*. Irina vaguely remembered her neighbor Perelman brother complaining about that book more than once.

"Well... I'm not sure... Maybe, this is the difference between the world's top and oldest magic school and Koldovstoretz, which was rebuilt after the war?"

Yermakov Ivanovich scratched his nose and replied uncertainly.

As a native Russian wizard, Mr. Ivanovich didn't know much about that mysterious magic school across the strait. His knowledge of Hogwarts was mostly limited to Dumbledore and Scamander.

The only thing that was certain was that no matter how much American wizards had emphasized the improvement of their Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry's teaching quality and how many outstanding wizards it had produced over the years, in the minds of most wizards, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry still represented the best magical education in the entire magical world – without exception.

And the "Hogwarts New Student Textbook List" in front of him, which was almost twice as long as the first-year student purchase list from Koldovstoretz Magic School, undoubtedly confirmed this point once again.

Obviously, in terms of academic openness and educational reform, Hogwarts' inclusiveness was far stronger than any other magic school.

This new student book list was a very intuitive comparison. In Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in addition to the traditional wizard courses such as spells, potions, transfiguration, magical zoology, herbology... Even the Muggle knowledge that looked like heavenly books to Ivanovich, the talented children of Hogwarts would not be left behind.

Yermakov Ivanovich carefully read the list in his hand and turned to look at his daughter.

"Irina, don't worry, you will definitely be one of the best students in the school!" he said. "About a quarter of these are Russian originals, maybe I can find a way to get you some Academy of Sciences manuscripts with notes and remarks – we have a natural advantage compared to those British kids!"

As the son of a senior magic professor, Ivanovich understood the importance of language in magic and even in various fields of study, which is why the Anglo-American magic circles were generally stronger.

Although he didn't understand the use of math and physics, these Muggle subjects, in the magic world, since Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had included them in the required subjects, there must be a good reason – as for the specific impact and meaning, Irina would naturally know when she returned home next year.

"These textbooks are not easy to buy," Irina glanced at her father quickly and said dejectedly, "There is only one day left before school starts, and we don't even know where to buy all these textbooks... and so many books must be very expensive..."

"Oh, don't worry, dear, we will find a way," said Yermakov Ivanovich.

A few traces of melancholy crept onto his chiseled face. "I will write to my friends and colleagues later. I believe they should be able to help us get at least some second-hand textbooks..."

Goo hahahaha—

Just then, a harsh, strange laugh interrupted the Ivanovich's conversation.

The little owl from Hogwarts suddenly fluttered its wings and flew over, landing on Irina's lap, its round, bulging eyes looking at the girl, and raised its wings to affectionately rub her arm.

"Eh? Dad, look at this!"

Irina was stunned for a moment, then rubbed her eyes hard.

She found another letter from under the wings of the strangely croaking little owl, which looked very short and small. It was more like a note torn from somewhere than a letter.

"The Hogwarts Student Union now provides one-on-one study guidance for special magic students in Russia and Ukraine. If you have any difficulties or questions about enrollment, please go to the [Destiny Group Potato Sales Point] in your city for help –"
