Mysterious Journey

Chapter 968 The Battle Between "Seers"

Some wizards possess an innate ability to perceive the future.

They can foresee parts of the future through dreams, the shapes of tea leaves, tarot cards, or crystal balls.

There are many well-known seers in the magical world, naturally including Professor Trelawney's ancestor, Cassandra Trelawney, and Cassandra Vablatsky, the author of the Hogwarts divination textbook "Unfogging the Future," the only contemporary seer to appear on a Chocolate Frog card.

As a descendant of Cassandra Trelawney, Sybill once firmly believed that she was a very capable seer.

But unfortunately, since having this belief, very few of her predictions have come true.

The Trelawney surname could not bring her milk and bread, and Sybill, who ran into walls everywhere after graduation, realized this very clearly.

In fact, for a time, she even faced the prospect of starvation.

Fortunately, in her most difficult and embarrassing period, Dumbledore extended a crucial olive branch to her.

Even though she accidentally became distracted during her interview for a Hogwarts professorship and almost made a fool of herself, Dumbledore still decided to hire her as the divination professor at Hogwarts and gave Sybill Trelawney the most important affirmation of her life:

"You are a seer, Sybill. I hope you can teach the mystery and wisdom of divination to the children."

Dumbledore said as he left the pub.

From that moment on, Sybill Trelawney began to seriously regard herself as a seer.

She cultivated a mysterious aura, carefully designed the tone and voice she used when speaking and lecturing, and read and analyzed the habits of other seers extensively, such as filling the classroom with a strong aroma... trying to exude an air of mystery as much as possible.

And for those who didn't believe in her abilities, Sybill would pretend to predict that they were about to encounter danger, trying to impress them with it.

After all, one of her hobbies was practicing various ominous prophecies in front of the mirror.

Perhaps she had really discovered some innate clairvoyant ability, or perhaps she became increasingly skilled at discerning people's hearts and environments. As she taught at Hogwarts for longer and longer, Sybill Trelawney "guessed" the students' thoughts more and more often.

However, Sybill Trelawney was still very clear in her heart that many of the predictions she made in class were not true predictions of the future.

Predicting the future is very difficult.

Especially when its object is a wizard.

Because the cause-and-effect relationships of people's behavior are always complex and changeable.

Seers can make prophecies, and some prophecies are recorded by the Ministry of Magic and stored in the Hall of Prophecy in the Department of Mysteries.

However, that is not based on automatic magical recording. Most of them come from the gratuitous donations of wizards who have had the good fortune to "hear the prophecy," to ensure that when they unfortunately die unexpectedly, they can preserve some particularly important prophecies—only after they pass away do the officials of the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic have the right to unseal those "sealed" prophecy crystal balls and listen to the full content within.

In a broad sense, most creatures who can briefly gain insight into the future can be called seers.

For example, almost all Centaurs are natural seers. However, their divination system is different from that of humans. They pay more attention to the natural signs of the stars and smoke, rather than the fate of a single person, so many wizards do not believe in the prophecies of Centaurs.

Compared to distant and abstract omens of disaster, most wizards are more likely to believe in prophecies heard from "human seers."

Unfortunately, true human seers are few and far between.

Moreover, they are often unable to accurately control their own predictive abilities.

In the prophecy crystal balls recorded by the Ministry of Magic, at least 90 percent or more are vague and incomplete prophecies.

Among them, there are many contents that are mixed with subjective will, such as divination interpretations, crystal ball insights, and celestial observation, and the remaining 10 percent are called "sight prophecies"—in the eyes of many people, this kind of prophecy is considered a "true" prophecy.

Sight is a divination term that refers to a very rare talent that occasionally appears in seers.

Having the talent of "sight" allows people to see the future.

In the British wizarding world, only Cassandra Trelawney and her great-great-granddaughter Sybill Trelawney have been confirmed to possess this ability—but Sybill Trelawney is not good at using sight, and she doesn't even know that she possesses sight.

However, Dumbledore's description of Erina not long ago was: Erina Kaslana has the talent of sight.

Professor Trelawney glanced at Erina with a complicated expression. Erina was sitting in the front seat of the classroom, looking particularly well-behaved.

"In the river of fate, rashly interfering and changing it is an extremely dangerous thing..."

Professor Trelawney said softly, her voice gradually becoming vague and mysterious, and her right hand raised as if she was about to touch something.

Along with Professor Trelawney's actions, Hermione, Cho Chang, and a group of students subconsciously held their breath and looked nervously at Professor Trelawney.

"Oh! That's terrible! How could this happen? No, I don't allow it—"

Just then, Professor Trelawney suddenly retracted her hand, as if she had been burned by something in the air.

"Newborn firelight... unexpected visitor... powerful... worrying future..."

"The price... of course... but..."

Professor Trelawney gasped violently, making a series of low, intermittent sounds. The students could only hear the sporadic words.

The classroom was silent.

Most of the students looked particularly dazed and panicked.

A few seconds later.

"Professor Trelawney? Are you... alright?"

Hermione, who was sitting in the front row, swallowed and asked softly, cautiously.

"What... happened to you? Or did you see something..."

"Oh! My god! Why would this happen—"

Professor Trelawney screamed shrilly, breathing nervously with her eyes closed, while pressing one hand against her chest.

"Don't force me to say it—this is too bad—no—this is my duty as a Hogwarts professor—no—I will never allow it—I have to think of a way—yes, that's right, that's right—let me think—breaking the order will pay the price—"

"...Uh, Pro-Professor?"

Hermione raised her eyebrows and shrank back a little, both frightened and confused.

At the same time, everyone stood up and slowly gathered at the front of the classroom, closer to Professor Trelawney's armchair, so that they could hear the intermittent, low murmurs from Professor Trelawney as much as possible. Unease quickly spread in the classroom.

"What's wrong, Professor?" Cho Chang asked boldly.

"My dear," Professor Trelawney's big eyes opened dramatically, "I saw an omen in the future of the classroom!"

"Sorry, you saw... what in the classroom?"

Hermione couldn't help frowning.

She was sure that she wasn't the only one who didn't understand the term: Erina shrugged at her with a confused look.

But the third-year students in the class almost simultaneously covered their mouths, as if they had heard some extremely frightening words.

"'Omen,' my dear, it's 'omen'!"

Professor Trelawney screamed tremblingly. She seemed very shocked that Hermione didn't understand. "The endless darkness shrouding Hogwarts Castle is spreading! The sun turns into a fireball and falls to the ground, my dear children, this is an ominous sign! As for the reason—of course—"

Professor Trelawney looked around at the nervous students, breathed a sigh of relief, and continued mysteriously.

"Hogwarts' teaching reform, if the Divination class continues to remain as it is, according to the original teaching plan, there will be big trouble..."

"Fortunately, with the opportunity of Miss Kaslana and Miss Granger joining us, we can start over once again, using a fairly reasonable variable to guide us to a different future path... Um, that's right, we need to change some of the teaching content, and some will start over."

"To gain insight into the future, we must first learn to see the past and re-experience the content we have learned before. On the one hand, this will allow us to avoid the approaching omen as much as possible, and on the other hand, it will allow us to better understand this course... but we have to speed up the progress, because unfortunately, in February, I may temporarily lose my voice due to frequent coughing, forcing the class to stop for a period of time..."

"So, let me think, my dear—"

Professor Trelawney said quickly in a low voice, turning her head and looking with her big eyes at Cho Chang, who was sitting next to Erina.

Under Professor Trelawney's continuous combination of "prophecies," the poor Cho Chang was completely panicked. She shrank back a few times in fright, hiding half of her body behind the Quidditch team captain—although Professor Trelawney had made predictions several times before, this one was obviously much more frightening.

"Oh, don't be afraid, child. Can you hand me that biggest teapot? Yes—let's start observing the tea leaves again."

Professor Trelawney said softly with a smile, looking around the classroom at the anxious students with satisfaction.

And what made her most satisfied was that the "little seer" who had been looking calm before was now sitting up straight with a serious expression.

Perhaps she was not so lucky to inherit the talents of her ancestors, but as a descendant of the Trelawney family, Sybill Trelawney still hoped to guide Erina as a "seer."

Now it seemed that her efforts had finally gained basic respect and awe.

Erina stared wide-eyed at the Divination professor, with a mixture of surprise and admiration.

She had never seen such a realistic and expressive performance.

This readily available mode of seer behavior, this ingenious way of hiding her purpose in mystery, if Professor Trelawney resigned from her professorship and went to the film and television industry in the non-magical world, she would definitely be qualified to become the best actress at the Oscars.

You know, even if she had expected it in her heart, she was almost scared for a moment just now.

Of course, more importantly—

Erina narrowed her eyes thoughtfully, carefully observing Professor Trelawney, who was taking the teapot from Cho Chang with a serious expression.

This kind of perception-sensitive inspiration wizard is really scary...

Just like the feelings of the Ministry of Magic and reporters from various wizarding newspapers when facing Xenophilius Lovegood, she now had difficulty distinguishing whether this Sybill Trelawney was really good at performing as a "great seer" or just pretending to be foolish and playing games in the world.

Especially...

When she had even taken the initiative to skip the "seer" identity in front of Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Undoubtedly, judging from Sybill Trelawney's level of attention just now, she must have learned something from Dumbledore. This extraordinary attention and testing, no matter how well she tried to hide it, Erina would not be fooled by her.

After all, Erina's skill proficiency in playing the role of "seer" was not low either.
