Zhou Yun had her own opinions, but being new to the scene, and also having some reservations, she didn’t approach Lu Yuan over the several consecutive days of shooting.
In the process of filming, Zhou Yun gradually became accustomed to Lu Yuan’s shooting style.
Lu Yuan really liked shooting short scenes. Especially with scenes that had a lot of dialogue or complex staging, he preferred to break them down into segments for shooting. This method was cumbersome and strenuous, but for newcomers like Zhou Yun and Gu Huaichun, it actually made the performance much easier.
Both of their features were very photogenic and expressive, but quite often they couldn’t quite grasp the subtlety. An over-the-top smile, or a line delivered too artificially, these issues could be more easily concealed through segmented acting.
At first, Zhou Yun thought there was something wrong with Lu Yuan’s aesthetic judgment, but later, through careful observation, Zhou Yun realized that Lu Yuan was indeed a very precise director. His precision meant that he knew what effect he wanted to achieve and would reach it in the fastest way.
In one scene, Yu Yhan was required to shed tears, but she couldn’t cry.
If it were a more demanding director, they might have tried to dissect the character with the actor, allowing the actor to immerse themselves in the character’s emotions to cry.
Lu Yuan had no intention of wasting such time and simply had Yu Yhan switch to a different acting method.
Originally, Yu Yhan was sitting in front of Zhou Yun, trying to cry and beg with tears.
Lu Yuan changed it so that Yu Yhan choked up, looked down, paused shooting, applied eye drops, wiped away the tears, and when Yu Yhan raised her head again, her eyes were already slightly reddened; she continued her lines until a sentence was completed, then paused again for more eye drops, she held them in, continued shooting, and as the eye drops rolled out of her eyes while she spoke, the scene was smoothly completed.
Zhou Yun was astonished.
She also reminded herself to never lower her own standards. In this crew, if she lowered her expectations for herself, nobody else would hold her up to them.
During a set change, Zhou Yun sat in her own little chair and overheard Gu Huaichun and Yin Zhou softly griping nearby.
"This way of shooting makes me feel like my acting training was for nothing. Why bother learning it at all? Just use eye drops," Gu Huaichun grumbled sarcastically.
Yin Zhou, always mild-mannered, simply responded, "The director must be rushing the schedule."
Gu Huaichun: "Even with rushing, I can’t stand watching this play. Yu Yhan’s performance is too fake. I have no idea how Zhou Yun can follow. I’m impressed."
He must have felt guilty for mentioning Zhou Yun’s name, as he glanced over at her.
Zhou Yun appeared not to hear, focusing on the script in her hands.
In reality, she was all ears.
She had heard Gu Huaichun’s comment.
Even though praising her was not his intention, this was the first time it had happened.
Zhou Yun hummed to herself, thinking that she had many more skills up her sleeve.
Suddenly, Yu Yhan came over.
She sat down beside Zhou Yun and said apologetically, "I’m sorry, Xiao Yun. I’ve disrupted you earlier. I just couldn’t get into the emotion."
What could Zhou Yun say? She gave a comforting smile.
But then she saw Yu Yhan pull out her phone, watching something—probably funny videos—soon enough, her laughter could be heard.
Their next scene was together. Wasn’t she going to revise her lines?
Even if the next scene didn’t involve her, given how poorly she had just performed, resorting to eye drops, how could she feel neither guilty nor ashamed?
The earlier show of contrition and the apology seemed like a joke.
Zhou Yun withdrew her gaze.
At lunchtime, the producer, Huang Zhong, arrived.
His appearance sent Yu Yhan fluttering over like a songbird, cooing, "President Huang, you finally came to see us!"
Huang Zhong’s smile was like a blooming chrysanthemum as he said, "I’ve carved out a little free time. I haven’t been here for several days, so I thought I’d come take a look."
The producer was the big boss, and all of the main creative team went to greet him.
Zhou Yun was no exception, calling out ’President Huang’.
Huang Zhong said, "Tonight, I’ve booked a place. Let’s all have dinner together."
When the producer spoke, Lu Yuan had no objections.
Honestly, Zhou Yun would rather stay on set and film than attend such a dinner. What was there to gain mixing with people she wasn’t familiar with?
But, when in the worldly society, one cannot decide everything for oneself. There will always be times when one must reluctantly commit to certain things or make helpless compromises.
