Chapter 179: Suspicious Maid
Josie
"What are you saying, ma? I would never try to disobey you intentionally, " Carolyn mumbled.
I glared at her. This woman who I had tried to help has been the only one causing more misunderstandings between me and the Alphas. She kept making it look like I was such a bad person, despite everything that I was doing for her. And now, her eyes were misting like she was about to cry.
Taking a deep breath, I rose from the bed. "Then, why are you here? You didn’t even bother to knock. At the last pack you were, didn’t the Alphas teach you anything about courtesy and how to respect your superiors?" I snapped.
She lowered her head, not saying a word. Her fingers pulled at her scarf, trying to cover her face even more.
"Josie is asking you something," Kiel grumbled.
I knew he was equally angry about the way that Carolyn was acting. He knew about everything that I have gone through yesterday, and I knew he would do anything to make sure that I wasn’t in this sort of situation again.
"Alpha," Carolyn whispered, pulling my attention back to her. "I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry for coming into your room without knocking but you have to believe me. I didn’t mean any harm. I don’t have anywhere to stay that was why I came to this pack and it hurts me that ma’am is using that to insult me and make me feel..."
"Enough!" Varen snapped.
I blinked in shock. I couldn’t believe she would say that.
He took a step forward. "You seem to have forgotten that it was my mate that made us do keep you in this pack in the first place. You’re supposed to be indebted to her and serve her like your life is on the line. But, look at what you’re doing," He scolded.
She flinched. "No, you have gotten me wrong. I didn’t mean it that way..."
"I don’t care," Varen snapped. He flicked his wrist. "I’m going to let this slide because you’re a new member of this pack. But, don’t forget that you’re like an omega here and you hold no position of power. You have to obey Josie at every turn and you mustn’t look at her in the eye while she speaks. I hope you honestly understand this," He whispered.
"Yes, Alpha, " Carolyn whispered at once without looking at me in the eye.
Kiel suddenly grabbed my hand and moved quickly to the door.
"Where are you going?" Varen queried.
We came to a stop and Kiel faced Varen once more. "She came to clean your room, so... I would take Josie back to her room instead."
"No," Varen shot out before he turned to Carolyn. "I don’t need my room cleaned. And, there are other maids that are in charge of all these. You can go."
"But," Carolyn whispered. "I have something to say to you."
With a groan, I moved quickly, jerking her to face me. Her eyes went wide as she struggled to hold onto her scarf. "You can’t talk to me mate. You’re a servant, so do as you have been told, understand?"
She gulped.
"Josie," Varen whispered calmly.
I flipped my hair. "Tell me."
"Let her say what she wants. It could be important."
I sighed, folding my hands angrily against my chest. "You heard him, right? Say what you want right now."
She took a step back from me. "Alpha Thorne wanted me to invite everyone over for breakfast and he is upset right now," She explained.
"Tell him I wouldn’t be eating."
Though Varen was still giving orders, I wondered about Thorne’s moodswing. He was so annoying yesterday and now he wants us to have breakfast like a big happy family. His attitude was so weird.
"What are you standing here for? Do what I said right now."
"Wait," I blurted out.
I could feel eyes on me. "Go to your room," I said instead.
Carolyn wasted no time running out of the room. I could feel my mates gazes on me and it was scorching. The moment we ought to have shared had been disrupted by Carolyn, yet I just let things slide so easily.
"I would talk to him," I broke the silence. "I’m about to get my bath and do some other things, so it’s the right thing to do."
"Josie, you won’t do that. I’m going to do it. You should have your shower. We’ve wasted so much of your time anyway and you know that Thorne isn’t on good terms with you right now. So, whatever has to be done would be handled by us. You, go to your room," Kiel said behind me.
I took a deep breath as I walked out of the room. Carolyn’s attitude was really grating on my nerves. Why should she try to make things difficult between I and the Alphas when I was the one who has spoken up for her. And the salty food was something that I didn’t quite understand. It wasn’t making sense at all.
I backtracked my steps as I noticed that the guards who were supposed to be with me, were not around again. Did Thorne tell them something?
Goddess, he was too much!
I turned towards the other stairs, and it led me down towards the maids quarters. It was quiet in here, because the servants were working.
Hopefully, Carolyn had gone back to her room. I needed to talk to her. My steps were light as I moved as fast as I could through the darkened corridor and before long, I was in front of an opened door.
"She is so annoying," A voice rang out.
That sounded like Carolyn. I stepped closer and she had her back turned to me. Her scarf was sliding down her hair, but something about the way she sat, made it seem like she was talking to someone opposite us.
But, when I stepped in, there was no one. She turned around her hand on her scarf holding it in place, and I couldn’t see anything.
"Someone was here," I blurted out.
She shook her head. "That’s not true."
"You’re lying."
