Chapter 101: Those who dwell in the shadows [1]
Reaching his dorm room on the third floor, Leon mindlessly opened the door.
Stepping inside, the first thing he noticed was the dim glow filling the room.
All the lanterns were on.
"Was Myra here?" he muttered to himself.
He clearly remembered turning them off before leaving, which meant only one thing.
It was Myra.
She had access to his room and often came by to tidy up or bring something. Being an assassin, she didn’t even need a key to get in, but Leon had given her one anyway.
He had told her, "Act like a normal human."
Leon walked toward the lantern on the wall and adjusted the knob, increasing its brightness to the maximum.
The room lit up properly now.
"This feels better now," he said to himself, exhaling softly.
Ever since he had transmigrated into this medieval world, the lack of technology had been a constant irritation to him.
The days of electricity, screens, and instant comfort were long gone. Now, he was used to living with lanterns and primitive tools, though he still hated it sometimes, but magic made it all cover up.
’How badly I want my RS5 console,’ he thought bitterly.
It had been ages since he last played a game. All his saves, his achievements, his gacha characters... all of it was gone.
Just thinking about it made his chest tighten a little.
"Haah... should I build a gaming console," he said to himself half-jokingly.
The idea didn’t sound that impossible to him. He had the knowledge to do it, but the problem was starting from scratch. Semiconductors, basic circuits, mechanical parts.
It would take time, but it was not impossible.
’Alright, I’ll add it to my checklist,’ he thought.
Hardcore gamers were a different breed. But a hardcore gamer with a genius-level brain and a lot of money was probably something the world would consider a psychopath.
Leaving those useless thoughts aside, Leon turned toward his table. Something was placed on top of it, but from this distance and his fucked up eyesight, he couldn’t see it properly.
’Let’s just get myself a glasses first...’ he took a note for himself, walking closer.
On the table was a covered plate and a jar of hot tea.
Leon smiled.
"Myra..."
She had prepared him a late lunch.
He sat down, poured himself a cup of tea, and lifted the cover from the plate.
Warm steam rose into the air. The smell was comforting for him.
He picked up a spoon and began to eat.
It wasn’t anything fancy, but the warmth spread through his stomach, relaxing him.
As he munched, his gaze fell on a small envelope and a medium-sized sack placed on the other end of the table.
He reached for the envelope first. The handwriting on it was familiar.
He squinted and read the words written on it.
[House Valentine]
[Weekly Allowance Report]
Leon didn’t bother opening it. He already knew what it was about. He tossed it aside carelessly and grabbed the sack full of coins.
"Hm?"
It felt heavier than usual.
"Did I get a raise?" he muttered, half-expecting.
He opened the sack and blinked at the sheer number of gold coins. Leon was stunned.
It was more than his usual weekly allowance.
Not wasting a second, he tore the envelope that he had tossed earlier open and read the letter inside.
"What the hell," Leon said under his breath.
His weekly allowance had been raised to 20,000 gold coins.
"But why?"
This allowance was set by the head of the house, who was his father.
Up until now, it had always been 9,000 gold coins. Now it was more than double.
No reason was given for the sudden increase, but Leon could guess it was probably because he had been accepted into Eclipse as a research scholar and received positive feedback.
’Still, for the duke to suddenly treat his trash son like this is odd,’ he thought.
In the original storyline, his father had never cared for him. Leon had always been treated like he didn’t exist.
"That’s just so random," Leon muttered, closing the envelope and putting it aside.
Even so, his financial status had improved overnight.
One gold coin was roughly equivalent to 400 Japanese Yen. So 20,000 gold coins came to around 8 million Yen. Roughly 50,000 USD.
For him, it wasn’t much compared to his old life, but in this world, it was more than enough. He could afford almost anything he wanted with this amount.
’20k gold is still less,’ he thought.
Leon had plans.
If he wanted to keep tabs on certain influential figures in this world, he needed ten times that amount. Information wasn’t free. It was expensive as hell. And keeping himself one step ahead of everyone would cost him a fortune.
He tapped his finger lightly on the table.
20k gold was the average allowance for most noble kids, which annoyed him. He didn’t like living off his father’s money.
’I need to work on a solution.’
"Haaah..." he sighed, pushing the sack back.
He checked the clock on the wall.
05:00 PM.
"Ah, it’s already five," Leon said softly.
He reached for his Spirit Ring and placed it inside the pocket of his coat.
"I should probably leave Myra a note," he muttered.
Just as he was about to stand and grab the ink and paper, his entire body tensed.
The hair on his arms stood on end. His neck froze mid-turn. His hand instinctively hovered over his sword, but he stopped. Instead of reacting, Leon forced himself to relax.
He sat down on the chair again, keeping his expression as calm as possible.
Someone was in the room. Watching him. The presence wasn’t faint either; they deliberately made him sense them.
And Leon already had a good idea of who it was.
He picked up his tea and took a slow sip before saying.
"Is this Twilight Order’s new way of greeting its brand new member?" he said coldly.
