Chapter 118: Chapter 118: So Foolish
"Really? Haha."
Ashley Shaw gave a perfunctory laugh, having no intention of further probing into May Lee’s matter.
May Lee’s situation would be dealt with by the law.
It was meaningless for her to speak more ill of May Lee now.
The law would provide the fairest judgment.
Of course, at the moment, the one injured is Warren Prescott, and whether this is fair or not still depends on whether the Prescott Family is willing to lift a finger.
However, the driver uncle apparently didn’t catch on to her perfunctory tone and continued talking while driving.
"That kid is pitiful too. Her parents worked in a mine; the salary wasn’t low, and life was going well. But unexpectedly, an accident happened at the mine, and both of them were gone."
"They should get compensation, right? But the mine owner had connections and managed to twist the accident into being their couple’s operational error."
"Not only did they not get compensation, but they also had to compensate the mine for losses."
"At the couple’s funeral, the mine owner came demanding money."
"How could a little girl fight against a boss like that? In the end, she handed over all her family’s savings."
"Later on, it was the people in our community who supported her schooling. Isn’t that tragically unfair?"
Ashley Shaw was stunned upon hearing this.
She only knew that May Lee’s parents had an accident at the mine, but she didn’t know such intricate details and follow-up events.
For a moment, her heart felt a mix of emotions.
"Ai!"
The driver heaved a heavy sigh, saying, "That girl is quite polite. It was after her parents’ incident and the issues at the funeral that her entire personality changed. She wouldn’t greet us, always kept her head down. I think she must have been traumatized and had some mental problems, to end up doing such outrageous things."
Ashley Shaw couldn’t help but remember the incident at the hospital and Claudia Jennings’s words: "I’d like to see which hospital dares to issue her a psychiatric certificate."
Based on the driver’s words and the information from "Leili Yuanshangcao", she had already figured out that May Lee didn’t just attack her out of jealousy, but more likely had some genuine mental issues.
"Ai! If only her parents were still alive, she definitely wouldn’t be like this."
The driver’s words touched Ashley Shaw’s heart again.
She, too, had often thought to herself, if only her mother were still alive.
She and May Lee were, in essence, people in similar misfortune.
If not for the misunderstanding about "adopted daughter", perhaps they could have been friends.
Ashley Shaw lowered her eyelashes and didn’t speak again.
The driver must have noticed her silence and decided not to continue the conversation.
Soon, the car stopped at the entrance of the high school.
There were two police cars parked at the school gate, there to block the media trying to get in to interview.
Ashley Shaw instantly recognized the logos on the microphones held by those reporters.
They were from the media closely connected with the Prescott Family.
It seemed the Prescott Family wasn’t planning to "lift a finger".
Ashley Shaw walked forward and communicated with a policeman, who allowed her in only after confirming she was a student.
When Ashley Shaw returned to the classroom, Mr. Coleman was just telling everyone, "Don’t reveal this incident to the media, especially not you guys in this class. It concerns the school’s reputation; I hope you all understand."
Ashley Shaw knocked on the classroom door.
"Mr. Coleman, I’m back."
Mr. Coleman looked at her with surprise, then turned back to the students and said, "Everyone, wait a little longer; once the media leaves, you’ll be free to go."
After that, Mr. Coleman stepped out of the classroom to talk with Ashley in the hallway.
"How are you? Not hurt, are you?"
"No, I changed clothes in time, and with three teachers helping me, not a drop of acid touched my skin."
Mr. Coleman let out a long sigh of relief.
"Seeing you back, I figured you must be okay, but I had to ask to be sure."
"Thank you, Mr. Coleman."
"Thank you for what? If anything, the teacher should apologize to you! After you left the classroom for the playground, May Lee told me she needed to use the restroom, only to return just when the class was lining up for the playground. If I had noticed something was off then, maybe the incident wouldn’t have happened."
"Is that when she got the acid?"
"Should be. That’s what I told the police, and they checked the surveillance at the lab as well, around the same time. It’s my fault; I should have been more vigilant, noticing her hostility towards you."
Mr. Coleman’s face was filled with guilt, and it wasn’t something that could be faked.
Ashley Shaw shook her head and said, "It’s not your fault. Who could have predicted she would resort to such an extreme action? No one expected this."
"Yes, she was indeed foolish. By doing so, she not only ruined her life but also damaged the school’s reputation. Admission is getting tougher every year, and now there’s this incident... The teacher in charge of the lab also has to bear responsibility. How could she do such a thing! Ai! I should have persuaded her to see a psychologist and take a year off."
"You don’t need to blame yourself too much, the matter has already happened, and no one could have foreseen this."
Mr. Coleman let out another heavy sigh.
"So foolish!"
But he quickly thought of something else and asked urgently, "By the way, Warren Prescott, how is he now?"
"He’s neither in a serious condition nor entirely okay; the doctor said he needs to be hospitalized for two to three days at least."
Mr. Coleman nodded.
"Two or three days isn’t too bad, thank goodness for him. If he hadn’t shielded you in time, your injuries wouldn’t be just a matter of two or three days."
Ashley Wyatt was wearing a dress, so her injuries would definitely have been more severe than Warren Prescott’s.
She felt both fortunate and worried for Warren Prescott.
"The teacher used to think Warren Prescott had a temper, but now I see he’s quite responsible and manly. You have a good eye; I hope one day I can attend your wedding."
Ashley Shaw’s expression froze, and she couldn’t help but say, "Teacher, I was naive before; now I just want to focus on my studies, not think about those things."
Mr. Coleman showed a surprised expression.
But he didn’t say much; this matter was between Ashley Shaw and Warren Prescott, and as a teacher, he wasn’t in a position to pry too much.
"So..."
Mr. Coleman hesitated and took two red envelopes out of his pocket.
"Will you give this scholarship to Warren Prescott, or should the teacher ask someone else?"
Ashley Shaw didn’t hesitate to say, "Please give it to one of his close friends; I’ll just take my portion."
Mr. Coleman knew from this that Ashley Shaw was serious.
She truly intended to focus on medical studies without thinking about romantic relationships.
For a moment, Mr. Coleman’s heart was filled with mixed emotions.
He used to hope Ashley Shaw wouldn’t get distracted by romantic affairs, but now he genuinely wished her happiness, and yet, she was no longer interested.
It was truly... hard to say what to make of it.
Just then, Cillian Xavier walked up from the other end of the hallway.
