Chapter 49: Chapter 49 His bodyguard.

Peace returned to the floor when the toxic combination of a sister and a rejected fiancée seemed to have departed.

It was uncaring of him to put it that way, but they didn’t deserve his sympathy. And honestly, him taking someone else’s supposed husband gladdened his heart.

Like that sweet, almost sinful feeling when a woman lost her man to another man—oh, the deliciousness of it.

Daniel then shrugged. Maybe, after all, all this drama was meant for him. He had calmed down a little back at the Mafia zone because of Adrian’s dangerous tactics, but now, nothing would happen here. Not when he would soon marry the owner of this glamorous palace. Who would dare raise a finger against the rich tycoon soon-to-be husband?

"Are you offended? Sorry, I didn’t fill you in about my fiancée, but don’t worry about her. Immediately we begin preparing for our marriage, she’ll be packing out of here indefinitely," Xylander revealed.

Daniel nearly giggled to himself. After all that high status and prestige she seemed to carry, the girl was still going to be chased away. Poor thing!

Like a perfect, understanding soon-to-be husband, Daniel shook his head in fake sympathy.

"Don’t explain yourself too much. I understand the sacrifice you’re making to get married to me—even with your public image. That alone is commendable. And about some flies? Leave them. They’re just called flies for nothing." Daniel grinned.

"They’ll hover around for a while and then move to the next shit to grease." He joked lightly.

Xyle nodded at his humor and brought out his hand, letting Daniel slide his arm into it.

"So, let’s retire to our rooms then. You need rest, especially for our wedding that’s only a few hours away." Xyle announced.

Daniel faked a smile. He wasn’t that excited about getting married. To him, marriage was similar to selling yourself off to a man in the form of ownership. But at this rate, he couldn’t complain anymore.

Not when your soon-to-be hubby was swimming in cash. Reluctantly, he slipped his hands into Xyle’s own, hugging himself inwardly to stay calm.

This is just for a show. Don’t let him get upset, Daniel told himself.

Alexander, at this point, was amused. He couldn’t get over Daniel’s expression.

This guy just kept entertaining him—the way he kept fidgeting when holding on to Xyle’s hands, as if they would break and collapse at any moment.

"Bro, just calm your nerves. It’s just a hand." Alex’s voice came out from the corner where he stood watching.

Daniel’s eyes snapped in that direction. For a moment, he had forgotten the sly fox was still standing there.

He had questions for him. How did they even know each other? And not to mention, how had he reached here so fast—when Daniel himself had been running through that forest, nearly shot to death by those evil crew members?

"What does he want?" Daniel demanded from Xyle, not facing the cocky man directly.

Alexander’s expression shifted into mocking surprise.

"Yes sir, even I too need to know how I got here," he questioned, clearly aware of what he was doing.

Daniel frowned. Was he trying to get on his nerves now?

"Alex here is just my friend, nothing out of the ordinary. And after our wedding, he’ll be your personal bodyguard wherever you go—because I trust him." Xyle revealed.

Daniel’s mouth formed a loud "O." Bodyguard? Alexander McQueen?

Like—what the hell was happening? Why him? Please, not now. Not the part where he’d be asked to follow him everywhere. That would be a nightmare.

"You’re joking!! No, you’re not serious, Xyle. Why are you just telling me this now?" Daniel demanded. If a thing like this was decided, he needed to be asked first. Having some random man infiltrate his private space, and only just finding out? Outrageous.

"Oh, are you angry? Then let me break it to you—Xyle didn’t even tell you the main thing. My work isn’t starting after your marriage. It starts now, this very moment you’re heading to your room." He deadpanned.

"I’ll follow you in, watch you, and stand by as you do your thing. Because Adrian Valez is planning his comeback, and you, Daniel, are going to die when he attacks this time. So, we can’t let that happen." Alexander narrated, his tone silencing Daniel abruptly.

They were doing all this for him, yet his ungrateful ass was complaining back to back when he should be glad. Underestimating Adrian would be a fool’s move, and Daniel dreaded to find out what that man might be scheming to get back at him for his betrayals.

Okay, fine. He’d go along with it. But following him even into his room? That was some creepy shit, Daniel muttered.

"Don’t be scared or worried. Xyle Wolfe has got your back. If anyone tries to get to you, the chances are close to zero. With the guards they’ll have to pass through, and the protection you’re under, it’s impossible."

"And Alexander here is a deadly assassin, so rest assured—you’re covered." Xylander assured him, then began walking toward the direction their rooms were situated. Daniel’s hands were still on him as he glanced at Alexander silently. Truth be told, he was glad Alex was asked to protect him. They might not know it, but he was afraid of sleeping in that strange, new room alone.

And the dark, too—not forgetting how being locked in that basement had refreshed his anxiety. Companionship was exactly what he needed, even if he denied it out loud.

Side by side, Alexander followed them until Xyle stopped at a corridor so wide it could have been mistaken for a playground.

What a luxury! Daniel admired, still smitten. Then he noticed a little detail. The walls in the corridor had portraits of a woman hanging on them, and this was the first place he’d seen it.

Even back in the sitting room, where the earlier drama had unfolded, it had been there. And Daniel wasn’t feeling too good looking at it.

It reminded him of someone—and it wasn’t a good memory. Something he never wished to remember in this lifetime. An experience that had made him lose his talent forever.

"Dan, your room awaits. Time to rest." Alex called his attention. Daniel blinked, remembering he wasn’t alone. He brushed off the feeling and turned back to Alex, only to see him pointing at a golden door.

"This, dear hubby, is your domain. Even after our marriage, I won’t force you to share a room with me, in order not to make you uncomfortable. So, this is yours." Then he smiled.

One of the few men Daniel had ever seen wear a genuine smile in his life.

"Take it as my wedding gift, dear. And I leave you both to it. Goodnight, boo. And Alex, make sure he’s comfortable." He winked at Alex and stylishly walked off, hands tucked neatly in his pockets.

Alex nodded and smirked when he saw the smile tugging at Daniel’s lips as Xyle departed. His smile bloomed beautifully, highlighting his otherworldly charm even more.

It wasn’t an exaggeration. Daniel Lancaster’s beauty was out of this world—ethereal, to the point that Alex found himself being pulled in.

"Falling for the hot daddy?" Alex joked.

Daniel’s smile faltered immediately. He rolled his eyes, turning toward the door.

"Don’t just stand there. Open it up, man." Daniel purred.

Alex twisted the knob, revealing a room of elegance and profound sophistication.
