Chapter 281: Chapter 281 "Where did you take Edward?
The phone rang a few times, but the call wasn’t connected.
Daisy Ginger was momentarily surprised before realizing that the car was probably equipped with a wireless signal jammer, preventing the phone signal from getting out.
As she thought of this, cold sweat started to form, and she could no longer maintain her composed expression.
There were three men in the car: one driving, one holding a knife, and one completely at ease. As a woman, she probably wouldn’t be able to get out of the car safely.
The man observed her expression, then curled his lips into a slight smile, with a hint of mockery and condescension in his voice: "I’d advise you not to make any futile struggles." He leisurely rubbed an engraved dark gold cufflink on his wrist, speaking warmly, "Of course, if you prefer, I can also let you sleep for eight hours, so that when you wake up, we’ll be in Chicago."
Daisy Ginger clenched the phone tightly, speaking in a low voice: "Do you have a grudge against Edward?"
"Edward is my brother. How could I hold a grudge against him?" Robert Stephens explained, seemingly somewhat disinterested now. He propped his face and looked out the window, saying indifferently, "I came here just to take him home. He’s been away from home for a long time, and I miss him."
"..." This man is just spouting nonsense. Missing him, what does that have to do with kidnapping her?
Daisy Ginger was very worried; without seeing Edward Stephens, and being abducted by this man, she feared she might cause some negative impact on Edward, regretting that she hadn’t paid attention to who was in the car before instinctively getting in.
If she had just taken a look...
She pressed her lips together, speaking softly: "Will you really not harm Edward?"
The man glanced at her, an expression as if he’d found something amusing crossing his eyes, and Daisy Ginger heard him laugh softly. She tightened her grip on her hand, unable to hold back the question, what’s so funny?
"Miss Ginger," Robert Stephens chuckled, "When we get to Chicago, you’ll regret caring so much about him now. You’ve made a foolish mistake, and... you’ve been deceived. I came here to uncover the lie for you."
Deceived?
A lie?
Daisy Ginger pursed her lips, slightly furrowing her brow. She glanced at the smiling face of the man in the rearview mirror. His gentle and affectionate demeanor was truly captivating, making it seem like no matter what he did, he could be forgiven.
Yet surely, in his true nature, he was probably cold and indifferent to the core.
"Who tricked me?"
"You’ll find out soon enough." He smiled mysteriously.
Daisy Ginger gripped her bag tightly, watching the car take the overpass, heading toward the airport.
Perhaps, in a moment, she would really be taken abroad by him...
Daisy Ginger’s heart sank a little, considering that once she got out of the car and called for help at the airport, she might be discovered by patrolling undercover agents, increasing her chances of being rescued.
Thinking this way, Daisy Ginger calmed down a bit. She sat in the passenger seat, exhaling slightly, and glanced at the rearview mirror again. The man had closed his eyes, seemingly pretending to rest, half of his face shrouded in dim light and shadow, his facial features delicate and mature, possessing the steady aura a grown man should have.
One day, would Edward Stephens also have this kind of appearance at his age...?
Daisy Ginger was momentarily lost in thought, and the man in the rearview mirror slowly opened his eyes, meeting hers. He blinked slowly, and Daisy Ginger, feeling slightly embarrassed, turned her head to look out the window.
The car became silent, only the faint sound of each other’s breathing remained.
Driving from the company to the airport would take a full two and a half hours.
By the time the car stopped, it was completely dark.
Banyan City only had one airport; both international and domestic flights passed through here, so even at night, it remained bustling with cars and people.
Daisy Ginger looked at the bustling crowd outside and felt confident that even if there were no undercover agents, shouting for help in the crowd would probably allow her to escape.
With this thought, she couldn’t help but glance at Robert Stephens behind her. The man propped his face and turned to meet her gaze. Not sure what he saw on her face, he suddenly laughed softly a few times. That low and pleasant laughter made Daisy Ginger’s heart skip a beat.
Almost in the very next second, a hand reached over from behind her and forcefully pressed a cloth with a strange scent against her nose and mouth! Daisy Ginger instinctively held her breath but still inhaled deeply, her mind suddenly becoming unclear.
Damn it, no wonder he was laughing. Whatever she was thinking, the other party must have already prepared a precaution!
Laughing at her naivety and stupidity!
"Your mom..." Daisy Ginger cursed, her whole body becoming limp and leaning sluggishly against the car seat.
Seeing that she couldn’t move anymore, the man finally looked away and spoke in a cool tone: "Get out of the car."
Soon, someone took a wheelchair out of the trunk and helped him out of the car.
Edward Stephens’ brother, turns out to be a cripple...
This thought flashed through Daisy Ginger’s mind, and then her entire consciousness was completely submerged in darkness by the drug.
*
This feeling was very strange.
In the midst of drowsiness, she knew who she was and knew she had been drugged. It was muddled, like a recurring nightmare, and she couldn’t wake up from it.
She struggled continuously in the darkness, like someone drowning, trying to grasp the sunlight above, not knowing how much time had passed before she finally broke through the surface, and the intense sunlight pierced through her retinas. Like someone almost drowned being pulled ashore at last, she opened her eyes, coughing and gasping violently.
She didn’t know how long she coughed before Daisy Ginger finally composed herself. Supporting herself, she sat up to find herself lying on a white bed, covered with a soft quilt, the bedding warm and comfortable.
"Awake?"
A deep, soft male voice came from not far away, and Daisy Ginger was momentarily stunned, looking up.
The sunlight was piercingly bright.
In front of the large floor-to-ceiling window, the man who had kidnapped her sat in a wheelchair, looking out the window.
Daisy Ginger got out of the bed, cautiously watching the man’s back, her voice hoarse as she asked: "What did you give me?"
"A bit of ether mixture, no side effects, and not addictive," the man said, looking back at her, his tone indifferent, "No need to be so guarded against me; I don’t intend to do anything to you."
"..." Daisy Ginger walked closer, tentatively asking, "Where did you take Edward?"
Robert Stephens looked at her, seemingly amused, showing a slight mocking smile, "You might soon never want to see him again."
"..." Daisy Ginger was too lazy to argue with him. She stopped a meter behind him, locking her gaze on his back, her tone unfriendly: "What exactly do you want to..."
Daisy Ginger raised her head and saw countless white tombstones outside the floor-to-ceiling window.
